The Volunteer Way Newsletter
"THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX"
With food being hard to find and getting harder every day, we are now looking for creative ways of finding food. We are committed to growing our own food in the 6.89 acres of property that the Parker Family donated to The Volunteer Way. We stared a test hydroponics farm in the rear of our food bank and hope to grow 2,000 plants in an area 50 feet by 25 feet. We are growing tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and cucumbers.
Pasco County Sheriffs' jail has been growing Hydroponics gardens for the few years and they have made a commitment to help us with their knowledge they have acquired over the past few years. Florida University has sent a Master Gardener to help us and she is developing our vegetable garden as we write this Newsletter. As God would have it, I asked Mike, one of the Deacons from my church to help us with prayer for those families that requested us to pray for them. Mike ended up with a degree in Horticulture and is a lot of help getting our farm off the ground. "GOD has a plan"
"VICTORY GARDENS"
We have invested a lot of money and time in our Hydroponics Gardens. We now have a Master Gardener, a graduate in Horticulture and thirty volunteer groups to help with the constructing and maintenance of our vegetable farms. We have great plans for our Hydroponics Garden, we have written a five year business plan, which includes training low-income families to have a community gardens to help feed their families. We will also ask our community to have vegetable gardens and donate the vegetables to our food bank. These community gardens will improve participants diets and add to their nutritional Knowledge.
"KIDS AGAINST HUNGER FOOD DRIVES"
Kids against hunger is our food drive program, which brings in thousands of pounds of food into our food bank. A food drive is a great community activity for businesses, civic associations, schools, neighborhood leaders, clubs and youth groups. Kids Against Hunger will furnish all the flyers and other needed paper work. If you or your place of employment want to assist the hungry families of Pasco County, please contact us at 727-815-0433, lester@thevolunteerway.org
